Healthy Eating Golden Rules

Following these rules of thumb or as I like to call them my “golden rules” for healthy eating are an easy way to help you get started on your wellness journey. Everyone is bio-individual, meaning that what works for one person may not work for another. Rather than recommending one specific diet for everyone I like to follow these golden rules that can apply to mostly anyone!

  1. When buying produce try to purchase organic or local as much as possible, and it’s always better to choose fresh versus canned.

  2. Frozen vegetables and fruit are ok! They’re usually frozen at their peak of freshness so the nutrients have been preserved.

  3. When buying seafood always opt for fresh not frozen, and wild caught versus farmed.

  4. When buying meat opt for organic or grass-fed.

  5. Try to limit the amount of refined carbs, sugars, and processed foods you consume daily.

  6. Use cooking techniques like sauteing and roasting versus boiling, otherwise you’ll boil out all of the wonderful vitamins and nutrients in your food.

  7. Swap out vegetable and canola oils for more nutritious ones such as olive, coconut, or avocado.

  8. Use a nice flaky kosher or sea salt rather than iodized, and fresh ground black pepper from a mill, and taste everything! How are you supposed to know if something tastes good if you don’t taste it first? And always season to your taste.

  9. Try to limit dairy consumption and substitute for alternative milks like almond, coconut, oat, or cashew when possible.

  10. For eggs, always look for organic pasture raised. This means that the chickens are raised outside in their natural habitat. Organic “cage free” or “free range” are not the best options because the chickens are still limited to a hen house and are not able to go outside.
